One of the important functions of the Allegany Arts Council is to grant funds to local non-profit organizations and individuals. In FY'17 (July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017), the Allegany Arts Council awarded over $25,000 in General Operating Grants, Placemaking Grants and Hadra Scholarship Grants to individuals and organizations throughout Allegany County. Applications are reviewed annually by a committee of community members. Funding for the General Operating Grant program is made possible through the Community Arts Development program of the Maryland State Arts Council. The Allegany Arts Council Placemaking Grants are designed to assist our community in making Allegany County, and specifically its two Arts & Entertainment Districts in Cumberland and Frostburg, look and feel like arts destinations. This is done through projects such as open air performances, murals and other public art, arts walks, pop-up events and galleries, artist relocation and residency programs, outdoor workshops, children's programming, and festivals. The grants are awarded to non-profit organizations and individuals, or combinations of the above. In contrast to General Operating Grants, a Placemaking Grant is for a specific project or program that addressed placemaking. Partnering and collaborations are strongly encouraged.
