2020-04-04 2020-05-02 America/New_York 6th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition

The Allegany Arts Council hosts its 6th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition and Exhibition (ANPCE) April 4-May 2, 2020.

The ANPCE began in 2015 as a way to recognize work of the local photography community, but quickly gained notice by a larger audience. In 2019, the exhibition received nearly 1000 entries, representing more than half of states in the U.S. The competition has introduced Western Maryland to photographers all over the country, increasing the photography community’s presence beyond our region.

The competition is open to photographers of all types, inviting entries in one of three categories: monochrome (black and white), color, and experimental. In 2020, we have modified the parameters of the experimental category, which will now focus on photography as sculpture. Our goal is to attract non-traditional photography using a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts and subjects which challenge traditional boundaries of photography and expand the view of photography beyond two-dimensional art.

Join us for a series of workshops, learning opportunities and social events which celebrate this important nod to the art scene in Western Maryland.

The Call

Entries are currently being accepted and may be submitted via www.callforentry.com. No entries sent directly to the Allegany Arts Council will be accepted. If an artist has not previously participated in a call through CAFÉ, it will be necessary to create an account prior to application.

Entries are $30.00 for up to two (entries) with a maximum of six (6) entries per photographer. The deadline to enter is February 10, 2020.

Juror

We are pleased to invite Cumberland, MD native and highly-recognized photographer, Brownie Harris, as our 2020 juror.

Whether photographing the luminaries of our time or ordinary people at work in factories and on farms, Harris has always remain focused on telling the story of his subjects.

After receiving his BFA in Communication Arts & Design from Virginia Commonwealth University, Harris headed to New York City, where he spent time driving a taxi, painting lofts, and working as a photo assistant. He landed a job as Graphic Designer for the Educational Broadcasting Corporation and soon after, at 22, created the photography department for the New York City PBS affiliate.

Since then, Harris’ portfolio has vastly grown to include portraiture, architectural photography, work for television and film production, and lifestyle and travel photography on location around the world.

For more than 40 years, Harris has traveled on assignment, creating iconic portraitures of John F. Kennedy, Jr., Carly Simon, Stephen King and Paul Newman; doing photography work for film and prime-time television productions, including Sleepy Hollow, Revolution and most recently, The Act, a Hulu original series.

After spending years living in New York and Paris, Harris today calls Wilmington, North Carolina, home.
