2018-09-22 2018-09-23 America/New_York Drama, Narrative, and Dynamic Still Life": A Colored Pencil Society of America Workshop

"Drama, Narrative, and Dynamic Still Life"
Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23
9:00AM - 4:00PM
Presented by Jeffery Smart Baisden

Are you concerned that your still life drawings are becoming predicatble, repetitious, or boring? Has your search for subject matter taken you through the produce market, the button and marble drawer, the flower garden, and into your Grandma's favorite vase? Do you want your still drawings to be more than a mere description of the objects used?

Join Jeffery Smart Baisden in this workshop, "Drama, Narrative, and Dynamic Still Life," while we explore the many possibilities for making your drawing "not just another still life," but one that creates interest, mystery, and engages the viewer to take a closer look.  The workshop will begin with a review of composition, effective lighting, and color relationships working from photo references provided by Jeffery. Using these skills and workings in a small format, you will set up a personal still life with objects of your choice drawing from life or a photography taken from your camera, phone, or tablet.

In addition to the art of the still life, participants will hone colored pencil skills and color mixing, explore burnishing and glazing application, and share tips and trick for a faster outcome.

The workshop will be held at the Allegany Arts Council, 9 N. Centre Street, Cumberland, MD 21502. Registration will be limited to 15 participants, and the cost to attend is $150.00 for CPSA members and $175.00 for non-members. Please make checks payable to CPSA DC 121. Registrations can be mailed to: Mary Alice Arnold, 11020 Ramblewood Drive, LaVale, MD 21502.

About the Instructor

Jeffery Smart Baisden, an Alabama native, grew up in the Florida panhandle and graduated from Florida State University.  After a move to Live Oak, Florida in 1974, she developed a fine arts program for high school students with emphasis in drawing.  Discovering colored pencils in 1980 as a valuable teaching tool, she began exploring the medium along with her students.  In 1992, she left public school to devote full time to drawing, exhibitions, and teaching workshops.  Her work has been featured in number publications, solo and group exhibitions, as well as twenty-one Colored Pencil Society of America Exhibitions. She was selected to teach one of two national workshops at the CPSA Convention in Memphis, TN in 2004 and in Bethesda, MD in 2017.  She continues to teach workshops throughout the country.
